I always wondered what Freemasons did, but apart from knowing they raised money for charity and met in lodges, I knew very little. I had always thought that you had to ask to join the Freemasons, but this is not the case. When an acquaintance mentioned that he had joined after filling in an online form, I thought I’d give it a go. I was very fortunate to be put in contact with St. Margaret’s Lodge in Lowestoft, my hometown. 

I had an informal chat with two gentlemen from the Lodge who went out of their way to be friendly and answer the questions I had. I later had a more formal meeting with members of the Lodge to check I would be a good fit. Once again, everyone was friendly. 

In November 2025 I was initiated and it was quite an experience! 

My lasting memory of the night of my initiation was not the ceremony itself (although that was a powerful and unique experience) but the friendliness and kindness of the brethren, without exception.
